Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy: Benefits, Indications, and More

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy or known as HBOT is a treatment that uses pressurized oxygen to increase the amount of oxygen in the body. It is a medical treatment used to treat certain conditions, such as carbon monoxide poisoning and decompression sickness.

What is Oxygen and Why is Important?

Oxygen is a very important element for all living organisms. It is one of the most common gases in the atmosphere. Oxygen is also the most important gas for sustaining life on earth. We need oxygen to breathe, grow and stay healthy. Beyond that information, oxygen is a chemical element that is necessary for our survival. It is a gas that makes up about 21% of the Earth’s atmosphere. It is an essential part of the human respiratory system and it helps in the production of energy in cells.

Oxygen is necessary for our survival because it helps us to breathe, provides energy, and protects cells from damage. Oxygen also helps regulate body temperature.

A hyperbaric chamber is an enclosed, airtight chamber in which a person breathes 100% oxygen under greater than atmospheric pressure. This increases the body’s oxygen content and helps wounds heal faster by promoting new tissue growth.

“The use of hyperbaric chambers has been around for many years. It was first developed in the mid-1800s to treat deep-sea divers who were suffering from decompression sickness.”

An Introduction to Hyperbaric Chambers

The most common type of hyperbaric chamber is the “oxygen therapy“. These chambers have been proven to be effective in treating wounds, burns, gangrene, and other infections. Hyperbaric chambers are used to treat a variety of medical conditions. They are most often used to treat decompression sickness, carbon monoxide poisoning, and wounds that won’t heal.

The chamber is filled with 100% oxygen and the patient breathes from a mask. The pressure in the chamber is increased so that the blood will carry more oxygen throughout the body. The treatment can last anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours depending on what is being treated.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is the use of a pressurized chamber that contains pure oxygen to increase the amount of oxygen in the blood. It is used for many different medical conditions and has been around for more than 50 years.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy works by increasing the amount of oxygen in your body by exposing you to pure oxygen at a higher pressure.

The Benefits and Indications of HBOT Therapy

  • Increase in blood flow and delivery of nutrients to cells
  • Increased production of red blood cells
  • Improved immune system
  • Decreased inflammation
  • Improved wound healing – Arterial insufficiencies – Wounds that are not healing properly.
  • Reduced pain and discomfort
  • It promotes healing by boosting the immune system
  • It helps repair damaged tissue and bone
  • It relieves pain from conditions like arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, and fibromyalgia
  • Air or gas embolism
  • Carbon monoxide poisoning
  • Decompression sickness
  • Delayed radiation injury

How many treatments will I need, and how often?

The number and frequency of treatments needed vary with the specific condition that is being treated. For many conditions, one treatment a day (Monday through Friday) is given for a total of 20 to 30 treatments, usually a total of four to six weeks.

How much time does the HBOT take?

An HBOT therapy condition may change for each person. It roughly takes time between 2 and 3 hours. Most of the patients are treated for one session but for some emergency occasions, the daily session count may up to 4. It is important to note that, the session count varies for each person, however a wide check-up to make a leveraged therapy is a must at this point.
